5 Warning Signs that Your Carpet Is Harbouring Mould

Home & Garden Blog

A mouldy carpet won't end your life, but it can damage your health, offend your nose, and ultimately cost you a fair chunk of change. Lucky for you, it is possible to avoid a complete replacement if you catch the issue early. Here are the five main signs to keep an eye out for.

1. You're Experiencing Allergy Flare-Ups

Alongside other irritants and toxins, mould produces airborne allergens than can causes allergic reactions in those who breathe them in. Anyone in your home who suffers from allergies, as well as asthma, bronchitis, and other issues related to the respiratory system, may find themselves suffering.

2. You Notice Discoloration

Discoloration is probably the most clear-cut sign of mould growth; unfortunately, it usually only reaches a discernible state once growth has become quite advanced. If you think there might be mould, open up the curtains and turn on all the lights so you can better identify discoloured patches. Most people expect to see only green, but mould growth may also show up as black or white.

3. Your Carpet Has Been Exposed to Moisture

Anybody whose home has been subject to flood damage should be on the lookout for mould, but this kind of water damage is a very extreme scenario. Mould needs just a little moisture in order to grow. If your windows frequently develop condensation or there's even the smallest leak, your home can become humid enough for moisture to develop in the carpet.

4. You Smell Something Unpleasant

Mould is not a particularly nice thing to have growing in your house, but that at least means that you should be able to sniff it out before it develops too strong a foothold. Some moulds don't develop any fragrance, so a lack of odour doesn't necessarily mean that your carpet is out of the woods. However, most will create an unpleasant musty smell. If you notice one, consider it a warning sign.

5. Padding Is Damp

Your carpet might look fine, but it's always important to check beneath it to see how the padding is doing, particularly if your carpet is in a basement room. If you notice any kind of dampness, however light, it's extremely likely that mould will have developed to some degree.

If your carpet is harbouring mould, make sure you contact a professional cleaning company like Stain Busters Carpet Cleaning as soon as possible. They will be able to fully appraise the situation, then combat the problem to return your carpet to its full and former glory.

Improve your Bathroom

Hello. My name is Tina and this is my home improvement blog. The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. My mother used to always say that you could discover a lot about a person by how clean their bathroom was. Because of this advice, I have always been very worried about the state of my bathroom. Last year, I was convinced that the bathroom was too old and grubby so I contacted a team of contractors who came out to work on it. They re-tiled the place and installed a new sink and splashback. I really love me new bathroom and I hope you like my new blog.
